Thursday evening ( 16th February), the business community and community representatives came out in force to celebrate the awarding of the Purple Flag for Maynooth in The Glenroyal Hotel.  Maynooth is the first town in Kildare and the only Purple Flag town in Ireland who have received this prestigious award with a University included in the zone.

Mayor of Maynooth Municipal District, Cllr Brendan weld  launched the Purple Flag award for Maynooth. The event  saw the official adoption of this internationally recognised . The Mayor, in addition to Director of Services for Kildare County Council Niall Morrissey, President of the Chamber Vivian Cummins, Ted Robinson General Manager of The Glenroyal Hotel and CEO of the Chamber Allan Shine welcomed the award and highlighted the collaboration of Kildare County Council, North Kildare Chamber and local community groups in the successful achievement of this award standard.

The award which recognises Maynooth as a ‘must-visit’ location will be beneficial as a marketing and promotional tool, placing Maynooth Town amongst a small number of towns and cities to have achieved this standard. The application which involved a thorough assessment of Maynooth’s evening and night time offering under the theme areas of Wellbeing, Movement, Appeal, Place and Policy is awarded to cities and towns that offer a well-managed, diverse, entertaining and enjoyable evening and night out to residents and visitors to the area.

Jennifer Forster of North Kildare Chamber who led the accreditation process said on the evening “  This award showcases Maynooth as a town that excels in its night time economy.  The awarding panel were delighted to see a bustling town with a wide variety of restaurants and bars coupled with high end Hotels and evening activities to suit all ages.  We will now start to promote Maynooth both locally, nationally and internationally as a must visit town”.
